From IT professionals to hunters and huntresses

As a concept, hunting is so far removed from agile software development, that when an IT professional wanders in the wild, applications architecture, user interface images or database queries couldn’t be farther from their mind. We wanted to offer a wilderness experience to as many people as possible, so in early June, Druid will sponsor an open hunting class to all professionals in our field.

As concepts, hunting and agile software development are pretty far removed. Sure, when you stretch your imagination to extremes some similarities are bound to be discovered, and the agile methodology can be applied to pretty much everything. Still, the difference between the two concepts is so vast that when an IT professional wanders in the wild, applications architecture, user interface images or database queries couldn’t be farther from their mind.

I started hunting a few years back, and now the hobby in question has turned into a way of life for me. When I publically came out of the gun cabinet, I soon learned that I wasn’t the only one: many of my computer oriented acquaintances had a hunting license of their own and at least as many were interested in procuring wild game for their dinner table by themselves.

Since a healthy dose of peer pressure lowers thresholds, and doing stuff together is fun, we at Druid decided to devise an open hunting class in early June for all IT professionals. The invitation doesn’t apply only to programmers, but for everybody: the masters of server rooms, product owners and UI artists are all welcome! The three day class will be held by Helsingin Riistanhoitoyhdistys (the Helsinki game management association) and will conclude with a hunting examination that will take a few hours. Those who pass the examination will receive a hunting license.

A license is a prerequisite for hunting, but a license alone does not a master hunter make. When we get the group together and the licensees have been licensed, the real fun will begin: hunting class nights, shooting practice at a range and finally – when all the necessary skills have been acquired – hunting trips. Being with a group of likeminded people is more fun, and there won’t be a shortage of conversation around a campfire. At the moment about two dozen future hunters from ten different companies have signed up. There’s still room for two dozen more, and I wouldn’t mind having a few huntresses coming along, too. Modern hunting is not by any means a men only affair. The amount of women hunters is constantly on the rise!

Additional information about the class alongside the sign up form can be found here. If you already happen to have a hunting license, and you want to join the gang when the real action starts, you can make yourself known and join the undertaking’s mailing list using the same sign up form.

We at Druid are masters of networking. After all, a large part of our business is based on a product built by a large, international community. We feel that co-operation with other professionals from information technology businesses is very important. By getting to know new people and new ideas, you open your mind and learn new things. Such as hunting.
